Topographical Test Training

The topographical Test training is a test based on a person’s ability to read maps, navigate and plan routes. Topographical-PCO licence is all set to help you PASS your topographical test as easy as possible with the comprehensive and cost-effective training course plan. PCO Licence Requirements

If you want to get your PCO licence then you’ll need to fulfil a few requirements:
  • You must be over 21 years of age.
  • You will need to have held a full DVLA, Northern Ireland or European Economic Area (EEA) state driving licence for at least 3 years.
  • You must meet the DVLA Group 2 medical standards similar to those required for drivers of large goods vehicles, buses and coaches. This is done by having a 30 minute medical with a GP ( We can arrange your Medical Check with a Private GP)
  • You will need to undergo a DBS (Criminal Record) check to ensure that you are an honest and trustworthy person
  • You must provide evidence of your Topographical Skills to show your map reading and route finding skills (we provide specific training and support for this)
  • English Language is needed – From 01 October 2021, TFL has introduced two separate assessments: a speaking and listening assessment and the Safety, Equality and Regulatory Understanding (SERU) assessment which is used to determine your reading and writing skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a topographical test?

    A topographical test is a sub-field of PCO licence that assesses your skills in reading and understanding maps and routes of London.

  • Is it difficult to pass the topographical test?

    No, the test is not much difficult if you get proper training for attempting it. It is an easy assessment to take if you practice properly by getting a good training course.

  • How many marks are required for you to pass the topographical test?

    The test requires scoring at least 60 marks or above that will indicate having enough map-reading knowledge.

  • What happens if I fail the test?

    If you fail the test, don’t be disappointed as you can retake the test BUT, if you fail the second time as well, you will need to redo the whole PCO registration process. So, it is important to make sure that you prepare well for the test.

  • How long does the topographical test remain valid?

    The test will remain valid for 6 months. However, you will not have to retake it until the PCO licence is valid.

  • What is SERU ?

    SERU means Safety, Equality and Regulatory Understanding (SERU) assessment. This will determine your reading and writing skills. This was introduced on the 1st of October 2021. It will be carried out at TFL offices.


    The assessment will be undertaken by a secure video or telephone link to our service provider, PeopleCert, and it will cost £36 when taken for the first time and £16 for a re-sit.

  • What is the new Speaking and listening assessment ?

    The speaking and listening assessment consists of a 15-20 minute conversation that will take place at TfL offices.

Is it mandatory to take the topographical test for a PCO licence?

Yes, it is absolutely mandatory if you want to pass at your first attempt.
  • Module 1: Map reading ability.
  • Module 2: Route selection (local) – tests the ability to plan and identify a route in a specific local area of the City of London.
  • Module 3: Route selection (intermediate) – shows the ability to plan and identify routes that are located in London, but that go beyond the local area.
  • Module 4: Route selection (long distance) – tests the ability to plan and identify routes situated outside of London.
  • Module 5: General topography – proves that you know the general topography of the Capital. It features major locations and roads, such as big cities and airports, which are located beyond London.
